Cowichan Childbirth Preparation classes are about getting a clear understanding of what your body is going through both emotionally and physically during labour and birth.  About understanding how other people's stories and the media influences your ideas around labour and birth and how all of these things put together affect how you labour and give birth. The classes will also answer all your questions around the physiological aspects of labour and birth, teach you how to create the "right" birth environment for you, give you some good pain-coping techniques to practice as well as giving partners plenty of ideas on how they can become a nurturing, active part of the process.

       Topics Covered

Class1: Understanding Labour & Birth
When we understand labour and put trust in a woman’s natural ability to give birth then we are better able to relax and let nature take it’s course. In this first class we will explore how your body is naturally equipped to cope with labour and birth. We will also talk about any concerns that you have regarding pregancy and childbirth and practice some pain coping techniques.

Class 2: Stages of Labour

A practical look at the changes your body is going through, both physically and emotionally as it passes through each stage of labour. You and your partner will come away from this class with a thourough understanding of each stage of labour with tools to help you both mentally and physically as you pass through each of the stages of childbirth.

Class 3: Comfort Measures & Labour Support
In this class you will continue to learn and practice pain-coping techniques, discover your own individual comfort measures and discuss how to create a supportive birth environment.

Class 4: Variations of Labour, Informed Consent & Pain Medication
In this class we will discuss what is "informed consent" and look at what we can do when labour does not progress as planned.

Class 5: Breastfeeding & Newborn Care
Breastfeeding may be natural, but it doesn't always come naturally. This class will provide you and your partner with an understanding of how to avoid some of the "pit falls" that make breastfeeding challenging amd difficult. We will also cover basic baby care and become familiar with newborn emotional and physical needs and behaviour.

Class 6: Transition to parenthood: baby proofing your relationship.
In our final class we will discuss your new life as a mother, couple and family and look at some of the things you can do now to prepare for this life changing event.

it's when their brains get involved that things can go wrong.” Peggy Vincent
